Maintaining a Happy, Healthy Culture is the Key to KL&A’s Success

OKEMOS, MI, Nov. 13, 2019 — Kunz, Leigh & Associates (KL&A) has been named a Top Workplace by the Detroit Free Press for the second year in a row.

Awardees are selected based solely on employee feedback gathered through a survey administered by a reputable, third-party research firm. The anonymous survey measures 15 cultural drivers to determine if employees feel aligned, connected, supported and heard. Each organization’s survey responses are then compared to benchmarks that are generated from the survey responses of thousands of companies aspiring to be among the Top Workplaces.

Of the 242 organizations surveyed this year, only 152 were recognized as Top Workplaces in Michigan. While KL&A appreciates the honor of being named a Top Workplace, KL&A’s leadership values the feedback above all else.

“The information obtained from the survey is even more valuable than the recognition itself,” said KL&A Partner Justin Shaulis.

Being a company that embraces retrospection and continuous improvement, KL&A’s leadership used the 2018 survey results to craft new strategies for improving communication, transparency, and engagement. The result, improved ratings in related categories this year, demonstrating leadership’s commitment to their employees.

“Ensuring a healthy culture is and always has been a top priority,” said KL&A Partner Dave Desrochers. “With KL&A’s rapid growth, cultural maturation requires a balance of maintaining the core values that have made KL&A successful without stifling the changes needed to evolve. This survey provides us with employee feedback that we can act upon to ensure our culture remains healthy.”

While pay and benefits are important factors to everyone, KL&A recognizes that culture and community involvement are equally, if not more, important to helping employees feel fulfilled. KL&A’s leaders strive for a transparent, inclusive environment in which employees can be part of KL&A’s mission, can help others in the community, can grow professionally, and can have lots of fun too.

KL&A project teams are self-organizing, collaborative, and empowered to solve real business problems with elegant solutions. This aspect of the culture is supported by open workspaces with ergonomic workstations and sit-stand desks, collaboration areas, and locally-roasted coffee.

A ping-pong table, company-sponsored wellness contests, sports leagues, and on-site athletic classes provide several outlets that promote fun, health and wellbeing. Monthly all-staff lunches keep employees informed about current company events, as well as providing a forum that encourages feedback and discussion.

KL&A’s culture fosters sharing knowledge with events such as monthly lunch-n-learn presentations where KL&A employees voluntarily present on topics they are passionate about, monthly workshops for more in-depth learning, technical meet-ups to collaborate with individuals across certain industries, and lightning talks to share knowledge in a quick and fun manner.

As far as community involvement goes, KL&A takes social responsibility seriously by supporting many charities through a variety of activities. Supported causes are selected by the employees and employee contributions are always matched by KL&A to increase impact.

Within the custom software development and consulting industry, KL&A ranked in the 98th percentile for benefits, which begin on an employee’s very first day. This includes multiple comprehensive healthcare plan options; matching 401(k) contributions, with no vesting period; employer-paid life and disability insurance; employer-provided HSA contributions; adoption assistance; parental leave for new parents; and a generous amount of paid time off.

KL&A takes it a step further by offering flexible schedules, monthly cell phone reimbursement, a clothing stipend for new employees, an employee referral program that yields a vacation of the employee’s choosing, and on-going education and training reimbursement.

Ranking in the 74th percentile for pay, KL&A’s employees feel well compensated for the work that they perform. In addition to competitive salaries, every employee can earn a performance-based bonus.

KL&A’s leadership views culture holistically, ensuring all aspects of an employee’s experience is rewarding from environment and values to benefits and pay.

Let me start by saying I don’t care for the term “work family.” I have a family I love, and they have absolutely nothing to do with my career. I want my work life to be its own entity. I like boundaries (and the George Costanza Worlds Theory). Certainly, I want to enjoy and trust my coworkers, and I want to feel supported and cared for…
